The Tyrolean baritone Wolfgang Stefan Schwaiger is performing this season at Opera Vlaanderen in Antwerp and Ghent as Don Giovanni in a new production by Tom Goossens, musically conducted by Francesco Corti. At Oper Köln, he appears this season as Lescaut in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut and as Conte Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro, conducted by Andrés Orozco-Estrada, the new General Music Director. In addition, the roles of Ping and Mandarino in Puccini’s Turandot are on his schedule. At the same time, he continues to devote himself to song recitals and concert performances, which form an important focus of his artistic work. In early January, he will also take a short parental leave for the birth of his first daughter—a personally special moment in the midst of a versatile season.
Since 2016, he has been a member of the Oper Köln ensemble, where he has appeared on stage as Guglielmo (Così fan tutte), Papageno (Die Zauberflöte), Dandini (La Cenerentola), Ned Keene (Peter Grimes), and Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. Guest engagements have also taken him to roles such as Thoas in Iphigénie en Tauride at Opera Vlaanderen and Belcore in L’elisir d’amore at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. He regularly gives song recitals and concerts with orchestral songs or oratorios, highlighting his versatility and passion for singing.
His past guest appearances include Giove in Cavalli’s La Calisto at the Teatro Real Madrid, Maximilian in Bernstein’s Candide at the Staatsoper Hannover, Marullo in Rigoletto, Moralès in Carmen, as well as Ravel’s Don Chichotte songs at the Bregenz Festival. At the Staatstheater Darmstadt, he was also seen as Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia.
During his time in the Oper Köln Opera Studio (2014–16), he developed a wide-ranging repertoire: Graf Dominik (Arabella), the title role in Purcell’s King Arthur for children, Freddy (My Fair Lady), Ping (Turandot), Schaunard (La Bohème), Hans Scholl (Die Weiße Rose), Falke (Die Fledermaus), Lescaut (Manon), Valentin (Faust), and Frank/Fritz in Korngold’s Die tote Stadt.
Even during his studies, he gained extensive stage experience, including performances at the Wiener Taschenoper, Oper Graz, and the Schlosstheater Schönbrunn, where he appeared as Conte di Almaviva (Le nozze di Figaro), Frank and Falke (Die Fledermaus), and Don Giovanni—a role he also performed in 2016 in the Opernstudio of the Bregenz Festival, attracting considerable attention.
Wolfgang Stefan Schwaiger has received numerous awards, including the Brahms Competition Pörtschach, Gradus ad Parnassum, Musica Juventutis at the Wiener Konzerthaus, 2nd prize at the International Ferruccio Tagliavini Competition, finalist at the Otto Edelmann Competition, laureate of the Festival Juventus in Cambrai, and the Tiroler Sängerpreis (2018).
Born in 1991 in Innsbruck, he received a broad musical education from an early age (recorder, trumpet, piano) and sang with the Wiltener Sängerknaben, quickly taking on roles as an alto soloist. From 2010 to 2014, he studied voice at the MDW Vienna with Karlheinz Hanser; in 2019, he completed his Master’s degree in Lied and Oratorio with Florian Boesch, graduating with distinction.
